Article: L'Île Cognac, an exceptional blend unlike anything ever produced before

L'Île Cognac, un assemblage d’exception encore jamais accompli

L'Île Cognac, an exceptional blend unlike anything ever produced before

L'Île Cognac takes us on an exceptional journey through lush vegetation, teeming with trees and flowers. This exceptional cognac is composed of four batches specifically selected by our Cellar master, Julie Landreau, for their remarkable characteristics:

  • a Borderies cognac made from 100% Ugni Blanc grapes
  • a Bons Bois cognac made from 100% Folle Blanche grapes, 13 years old
  • a Bons Bois cognac made from 100% Folle Blanche grapes, 15 years old
  • a 65-year-old Grande Champagne cognac

The Folle Blanche and a Borderies cru eau-de-vie created using Maison Camus’ unique distillation technique are what give this exceptional blend its notes of white flowers, lily of the valley, and violets, which meet with crisp aromas that transport the taster to new heights.

The Île Cognac blend represents the mindset that guides Maison Camus’ every action: Make the best cognacs in the world.

Blending different varietals by delicately combining different eaux-de-vie is the way to obtain the best possible cognac. The art of the blend, following the Cellar master’s plan, captures the character of the cru, the secrets of the grape variety, the intensity of distillation, and all the subtleties of the cellar.

BORDERIES COGNAC - 2005 VINTAGE

The Borderies cru

From the smallest cru of the protected designation of origin - with just 10,000 of the over 200,000 acres that make up the cognac appellation - the unparalleled aromatic, floral profile of the Borderies cru makes it the most sought-after area.

18 years of ageing

In small 350-liter (92-gal.) oak barrels selected for their fine grain and very slightly heated to bring out a subtle but rich (vanilla) touch of woodiness and a rounded flavor. The ageing process is stopped at precisely the right moment to optimize its floral richness without heading into spicier, more toasted notes.

A careful selection

A specific batch that contributes to the rich aroma, fineness, and elegance of the Île Cognac blend.

BONS BOIS COGNAC 100% FOLLE BLANCHE - 13 YEARS OLD

A batch from the 2009 harvest

From a partner vineyard in the village of Grézac in the Charente-Maritime department. The hot summer of 2009 in France enabled a remarkably high level of potential alcohol and optimal ripeness to be reached during the September harvest.

The Folle Blanche grape

A variety that reigned supreme over cognac country for three centuries before it was devastated by phylloxera in the 1870s. Although it barely accounts for 0.5% of the vineyards in the Charente department today, it remains widely recognized for its refinement, bouquet, and heady floral aromas. Despite its vulnerability to disease, which makes production levels difficult to predict, the Folle Blanche is still highly sought after by some passionate connoisseurs.

A rich eau-de-vie

Distilled on lees to enrich it with aromatic esters, deepening its scent structure with fruity notes.

13 years of ageing

In small 350-liter (92-gal.) oak barrels selected for their medium grain and intensely heated to bring out a spiced, woody flavor. The ageing process is stopped at precisely the right moment to maintain the perfect equilibrium between the fruity and floral aromas that the varietal and distillation process provide.

BONS BOIS COGNAC 100% FOLLE BLANCHE - 15 YEARS OLD

The Folle Blanche grape

If Ugni Blanc is a tenor, then Folle Blanche is a soprano. This curious specimen, which accounts for less than 0.5% of the cognac appellation, is popular for its unparalleled floral intensity. Fascinated by this singular aroma, Maison Camus today dedicates 5% of its estate to cultivating Folle Blanche grape

15 years of ageing

In oak barrels to bring out the delicate fruity top notes of this eau-de-vie, add spicier aromas, and create a flavor that lingers in the mouth.

VENERABLE GRANDE CHAMPAGNE COGNAC - GUARANTEED MINIMUM AGE OF 65 YEARS

An exceptional selection

One of the finest treasures our Paradise has to offer, this aged batch has been preserved for the last few years in a Dame Jeanne to keep it at its finest. Only a few precious liters of this batch have been preserved to date.

A half-century of ageing

Staying true to the aromas found in cognacs aged for more than fifty years in oak barrels, rancio, dried fruit (walnut, hazelnut), and vanilla all play a role in the richness of the Île Cognac blend.
