 FINE ISLAND COGNAC

 The Maritime

Imagine an island. Listen to the surf, the breath of the ocean as it weaves through the rows of vines, overturning the fruit and steeping the earth in salt and light. It is at the very edge of the Charentais appellation, where they say the vines plunge into the Atlantic, that our sea-legged hussar was born: Fine Island Cognac.

HEADING FOR FORGOTTEN TERROIRS

At the dawn of the new millennium, driven by an untameable curiosity, Maison Camus ventured to the farthest reaches of the Cognac vineyards, into the lands of the Bois à Terroirs. Once dismissed as unremarkable, these lands had been abandoned and forgotten by those who had forgotten how to see. Yet, for those who follow the whispers of the salt-laden wind, they reveal an unspoilt vineyard, a secret nestled between sky, land and ocean: the Île de Ré.

“Fine Island is the most accomplished expression of our Île de Ré cognacs. We wanted to heighten what makes them unique, iodine and freshness, while adding a subtle touch of wood, revealing a more indulgent side without ever overpowering it.”

Julie Landreau, Cellar Master at Maison Camus

THE TRIAL OF SALT

With barely five hundred hectares of vines, half of them dedicated to cognac production, the Île de Ré is a micro-terroir with a character all its own. Its limestone and sandy soils, iodine-rich sea spray, kelp and ocean winds shape grapes of remarkable minerality, giving rise to cognacs up to five times saltier than those produced on the mainland. From the very essence of this island terroir, Camus la Grande Marque has crafted a cognac that defies convention, alive with vibrant freshness and iodine-rich aromas.

THE TRIAL OF THE WINDS

Westerly sea winds can sweep across the Île de Ré with considerable force. Yet they meet a relatively mild climate, tempered by the influence of the Gulf Stream. It is within this singular balance that part of the Fine Island blend has matured, exposed to sea spray, Atlantic winds and the whims of nature, as wild as it is unpredictable.

On an island like the Île de Ré, the fiercest storms can engulf entire vineyards beneath the waves. Such events temporarily saturate the soil with salt and minerals, lending the grapes an extraordinary maritime character. Among the eaux-de-vie from the Île de Ré selected by the Cellar Master for Fine Island, one stands apart for its untameable spirit. It was born in a year marked by one of the most violent storms to strike the island in the past century, when nearly 2,400 hectares, approximately one-third of its territory, were submerged by the ocean. At the heart of the Fine Island blend, this eau-de-vie, distilled on lees with a particularly pronounced iodine character shaped by the storm, still bears the imprint of that extraordinary event: the mark of a terroir pushed to its limits, where the sea swept far inland.

THE TRIAL OF FIRE

One final trial awaits part of the blend: fire. Drawing inspiration from the world of Scotch whisky, Julie Landreau brings the finishing touch to her maritime cognac.
A tiny proportion of the Fine Island blend is transferred into casks previously charred using the Char method, also known as crocodile or alligator charring. This technique involves setting fire to the inside of the casks through direct exposure to flame. The result is a toasted roundness, gentle spices, a hint of vanilla and a mellow, layered depth that transforms its original oceanic spirit into a lingering finish, both saline and indulgent.

Fine Island is more than a cognac shaped by the ocean. It is a fully realised spirit, crafted with precision until it achieves a harmonious balance of freshness, salinity and rounded oak notes.

Thus emerges a cognac made for movement and sharing, vibrant, rounded and saline at the same time. A cognac that carries the breath of the island within it, yet chooses the adventure of the open sea.
