Our environmental policy is structured around three areas where we measure our impacts and contributions.
Camus maintains an innovative and sustainable viticulture that helps to preserve our terroir.
In 2019, our vineyard in the Borderies became one of the very first High Environmental Value certified vineyards of our appellation. We help our partners work in a more environmentally friendly manner and we make the most of their efforts through a contractualisation policy that is conducive to virtuous practices. Today, more than 30% of our supply comes from HEV certified vineyards.
Biodiversity and water resource remain priorities across all our activities. In 2022, we planted more than a kilometre of hedges in our vineyard. This amounts to more than 1,500 trees, shrubs and bushes, all labelled “Local Plant” derived from seeds harvesdted in our region that were planted to support biodiversity and limit erosion.
Preserving the water resource is a significant challenge for our business. With this in mind, 100% of our distillation residue feed a local methanisation unit and recover rainwater in our vineyard in order to minimise extraction.
Camus is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions and contributing to the global carbon neutrality target by 2050. Annually with the help of external experts we measure all of our emissions, item by item, with no compromises (Bilan carbone ® Method [Carbon Assessment Method]). The climate issue is clearly stated in our corporate strategy and our team is dedicated to minimizing the usage of natural resources from our terroir in order to preserve and protect it.
Reducing our carbon footprint is essential to control and minimizing the global warming. In 2021, we emitted 10 MTeq of CO2 (all scopes combined). Today, we are aware of our major emission stations and our main objectivel is to reduce our emissions by 5% each year.
Energy: Since 2018, we have launched the thermic exchanger system in our distillery which is allowing us to reduce gas and electricity consumption. Depending on the year we are able to save up to 15% of the total energy.
Preserving resources, limiting waste and use of plastics, promoting re-use and recycling are the key areas of our eco-innovation strategy rolled out collectively with our stakeholders. We are investing in our organisation as part of a low-impact transparent approach in the interests of Excellence, Efficiency and Creativity.
Our ambition is to provide highly desirable cognacs that are designed with a goal of enhancing our terroir.
At Camus, we have chosen to eco-design our products and calculate the environmental footprint of all of our product lines.
It is for this reason that we use an environmental impact calculation tool that provides our design teams with real-time product impact information, thereby enabling them to take action at the source, namely as of the design phase.
We have called on outside expertise to guide us through our approach and design our tool. In order to maintain our objectivity and the transparency of our approach, we have also had our life cycle analysis tool validated by the Eco-design Division, ensuring compliance with ISO 14 040 and ISO 14 044 standards.
To limit our footprint and showcase our territory’s traditional expertise, more than two-thirds of our packaging items are manufactured in France. We also strive to maximise recycling of our waste and support circular innovation. As such, on our cellars in 2020, we opted for new barrels derived from a wood recovery process used in the cooperage industry for 60% of our supply.
